Opening the twentieth session of Human Rights Council of the United Nations today Monday June 18 in the city of Geneva, Switzerland, Ms. Navi Pillay, High Commissioner of the United Nations for Human Rights, expressed in the event concerned by the dramatic increase in violence against the journalists, particularly in Mexico.
The Mexico Office of the High Commissioner of the United Nations for Human Rights (UN-DH) strongly condemns these acts, expresses condolences to the families and colleagues of the victims and stresses the urgent need to develop research on these painful events timely, thorough, and impartial to enable more rapid identification, prosecution and punishment of those responsible.
The representative in Mexico of the High Commissioner of the United Nations for Human Rights, Mr Javier Hernandez Valencia, said that "the recent constitutional reform that allows to know and attract crimes against freedom of expression to be investigated and prosecuted at Federal is part of a comprehensive response that needs to remain prioritized. Each new act of violence against journalists in Mexico and certainly deserves to be condemned unequivocally, while imposed on authorities to urgently implement effective mechanisms for prevention and protection, including those already approved in the Act People Protecting Human Rights Defenders and Journalists, whose enactment should be accelerated. "
